I think that he was either guilty or totaly naive cause those kids who stayed at his house were cancer patients as much as i know and he probably wanted to support them through the illness but he didnt even thought that maybe their parents gonna try to sue him and get money out of him this way or maybe it was just more important for him to support them despite that risk cause he did got sued for the same reason once before.
